About the job:
The Facilities Management department is looking for a Painter I with an understanding of painting techniques and strong attention to detail. The selected candidate’s craftsmanship will play a vital role in transforming SAN spaces while building a strong foundation for growth in a skilled trade.

What you’ll do:

  • Preparation & Finishing: Prepares and restore various surfaces by scraping, burning, sanding, plastering, and repairing areas as needed. Applies a wide range of commercial and specialized industrial protective coatings including undercoats, finishing paints, enamels, stains, waterproofing agents, varnishes, waxes, lacquers, wallpaper, sheetrock, and stucco. Prepares paints and other protective coatings. Strips roadways and parking lots, mounts maps. Prepares walls for color schemes, and repairs damages caused by fungus or termites.
  • Project & Tool Management: Sketches and lays out work based on drawings, sketches, or blueprints. Interprets schematics and diagrams, requisition tools and supplies, and maintain accurate records, logs, blueprints, and specifications. Completes minimal estimate of materials. Sets up and take down scaffolding, staging, and rigging, and operate a range of manual and electric painting tools and equipment such as brushes and rollers.
  • Operational Support & Coordination: Uses computers to create and manage records, timecards, and work orders. Coordinate tasks with stakeholders, assist in training or instructing others, and perform other related duties to support the efficiency and success of the painting team.
  • Operational Driving*: Drives and operates Authority vehicles to job sites and multiple locations throughout the Authority campus. Transport essential equipment for projects and repairs. Drive to emergency situations as needed.

  • Project Management: Accurately assesses project scope, and timeline by determining required process steps and resources needed to achieve defined outcomes and objectives. Coordinates with stakeholders.
  • Safety Ambassador: Demonstrates knowledge of safety regulations and safe work practices including the proper use of PPE, tools, and hazardous materials. Promotes a culture of safety by identifying potential hazards, reporting unsafe conditions, and encouraging team adherence to safety protocols.
  • Relationship & Interpersonal Skills: Cultivates interpersonal rapport and trust, both up and down, by exhibiting consistency and reliability; demonstrated awareness of others’ needs. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.
  • Leveraging Technology: Effectively uses and generates information electronically integrates technology solutions and systems.

Requirements

The Experience You Need to Have **:

  • High school graduation or GED;
  • Successful completion of an apprentice certification training program;
  • Or one year of construction and/or industrial painting experience;
  • Or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses, Certificates, and Special Requirements :

  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Authority’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Successful completion of a fingerprint-based background investigation, training, and testing required for employment and operation and operation of Authority and San Diego County physical security, surveillance, radio and telecommunications equipment.

*Driving is an Essential Function

This role requires regular driving as a critical part of performing work-related duties, specifically involving the operation of Airport Authority vehicles. A valid California driver’s license is required, along with strict adherence to all traffic laws and safety regulations. Applicants must maintain an acceptable driving record to operate Authority vehicles. Compliance with Airport Authority vehicle use policies, including safety protocols and reporting requirements, is mandatory. Applicants must acknowledge that driving Airport Authority vehicles is an essential function of this role.
